The Nathaniel Russell House is generally thought to have been the last of Charlestons great post Revolutionary War period houses. The staircase under study was designed to be used only by slaves yet it surprisingly shows brilliant craftsmanship indicating that even secondary spaces were well thought off and were designed. Oh and by the way Russell was 50 when they got married and didnt move into his large family home until he was 70.
Although now it is supported by steel beams the cantilevered step system is evident. The smooth white plaster planes accent its slender mahogany rail while the stair treads and risers set up a staccato angularity. It was awe inspiring if you looked up to the 3rd floor.
